Tour map

Day 1

Arrival in Tunis.

Day 2

Arrive at Djerba airport, cross to the mainland, gear up, hop onto your motorbike and head straight for the dirt. 130 km of tracks, gravel and rocks with a quick lunch at a local restaurant. Overnight inside a cave in a typical troglodyte hotel.

Day 3

Great playground on single tracks, camel grass, eroded landscape and the first sand dunes on the way to the last town before the huge Sahara opens in front of us.

Day 4

Short stroll through the local market to stock up for the upcoming days far from the civilization. The first a bit demanding dunes, a quick lunch at a desert café and overnight at the campfire and surrounded by magical dunes.

Day 5

Rest day with or without playing in the sand, or a loop over quite high and demanding dunes to the Tembaine tabletop mountain and back to our bivouac.

Day 6

Two options: easier route together with our off-road truck – more flats and gravel, fewer dunes; challenging route over dunes, dunes and more dunes without support to the Ain Houidat lake deep in the desert and then over another set of dunes, dunes and dunes to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane to meet our truck and the rest of the group there.

Day 7

Rest day at a natural thermal pool. Beer, swimming, showers, shade, camel or horseback riding or playing in the sand sea just in front of the oasis.

Day 8

Camel grass and low dunes at first, fast gravel tracks in the second part to reach the troglodyte town of Matmata again.

Day 9

Early morning transfer to the Djerba airport.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1.

Day 2.

130 km

distance icon

8 h

Surface: compact sand, tarmac, gravel, round rocks

On this day, you will be already riding in the desert. But first, you will take a morning flight from Tunis to Djerba (not included in the tour price, but can be arranged by us) where you will be greeted by your Desert Soul guide and taken to where our assistance truck and the bikes will be waiting for you. We will gear up and quickly get off the asphalt. The 130 km ridden on this day will take us across gravel roads, dry riverbeds, flat areas and through the mountains to Matmata, village famous for its troglodyte dwellings. Only the last 10 km we will ride on asphalt.

After checking into our troglodyte 4**** hotel, we will have a drink and discuss today's riding experience with the other tour participants. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Day 3.
distance text-nowrap icon

150 km

Surface: compact sand, sandy tracks, rocks, gravel, sandy riverbed, dunes, maybe some tarmac

We will leave the hotel in the morning and get off the asphalt straight away. After traversing the mountains surrounding Matmata, the open desert space will expand in front of us. Fast tracks, sandy riverbeds and some low dunes will characterize today's riding experience that will bring us to the oasis of Douz, also known as "the gate to the Sahara". Dinner and overnight in a 4**** hotel in Douz.

Day 4.
distance text-nowrap icon

+-70 km

Surface: soil, dunes

After a morning stroll through the town and a visit to the local market to replenish our provisions for the desert, we will leave Douz on this day and take our motorbikes into the sand sea. The exact route and difficulty level will be chosen by the guide based on the proficiency level of the participants. We will spend a couple of nights deep in the desert without light pollution or cell-phone coverage. Dinner and overnight on an attractive location in the Desert Soul Mobile Camp.

Day 5.
distance text-nowrap icon

20 km

Surface: dunes

After the breakfast, our bikes' heading will be south and later southeast, reaching the Tembaine table mountain in the afternoon after crossing the a bit challenging sand sea. You will be learning the importance of correctly deflated endure bike tyres today.

An alternative easier route following the support truck can be taken by whoever doesn't feel fit for the higher dunes that we will be riding on this day. After reaching the table mountain, we will of course park the motorbikes and climb to its top on foot. You will feel the soft breeze and enjoy perfect silence with a sight of endless dunes, stretching to the east, south and west as far as the horizon. On this day, our bivouac is planned to be near the mountain.

Day 6.
distance text-nowrap icon

100-150 km

Surface: gravel, dunes

This half-day stage will lead us directly across the sand sea, without support, to the famous tourist oasis of Ksar Ghilane, known for its thermal pool surrounded by beer-selling bars. Spending some time in the warm water will be much welcomed after the long desert stage. Dinner and overnight at the oasis camp site.

Day 7.
distance text-nowrap icon

0-100 km

Surface: dunes

Rest day around the oasis pool. We suggest a trip to the Roman fort, playing with your motorbikes in the dunes or taking an excursion with camels or on horseback. Dinner and overnight in the oasis camp.

Day 8.
distance text-nowrap icon

80 km

Surface: gravel

On this day, we will experience a completely different desert stage to reach again the Berber settlement of Matmata we will have known already from our first riding day. Desert gravel roads and open tracks, frequently crossing dry flash flood channels in the first part, will give way to impressive bare mountains surrounding us when already approaching Matmata. Farewell dinner and overnight in a 4**** hotel.

Day 9.

Early in the morning, we will take you to the Djerba airport from where you can take the morning flight to Tunis (air ticket not included in the tour price, but can be arranged by us) or extend your stay in Tunisia on the beach.

If you have been using your own motorbike, it will be delivered to you on an agreed date in Ljubljana (or transported on your expense to any other destination of your desire). End of our services.

Why bothering to bring your bike and gear to the desert? Rent one of our bikes and gear, travel hassle-free and save your time – we will prepare the bike for the desert and service it during and after the tour.
